Sermon for Lent III: Shoes of Readiness

Shoes of Readiness to Proclaim the Gospel The Whole Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17) #3 Lent III; March 4, 2018 I Peter 3:13-22 Today we had a "hymn Sunday," so the service music was hymns and there was a lot of extra music. Consequently, I kept my speaking to a minimum and included hymns as part of the sermon. The First Letter of Peter was ...

Sermon for Lent 2: The Breastplate of Righteousness

The Breastplate of Righteousness The Whole Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17) #2 Lent II; February 25, 2018 Philippians 3:4b-11 I wonder if St. Paul was a runner. Sometimes he explicitly uses running as a metaphor for Christian living and other times it seems to be on his mind, as in this section of Philippians. Here's what comes to my mind when I re...

Sermon for Ash Wednesday: Love Is Strong as Death

Love Is Strong as Death Ash Wednesday; February 14, 2018 Song of Songs 8:6-7 One of my fraternity brothers made a choice when we were in college; he wrote me a note about it. Many years later I was talking with someone who was still in touch with him and that person said he was still living by that choice. The choice was not to allow anyone ...

Sermon for February 11: The Temple of Christ's Body

The Temple of Christ's Body The Transfiguration of the Lord; February 11, 2018 John 2:13-21 I was listening to an interview with the poet Mary Karr the other day; I'll bet our women's book club has read one of her memoirs (Note: As it turns out, they have not). Anyway, she had no religion in her life and wasn't particularly interested, perhaps larg...

Sermon for January 28 - A Place for Healing

A Place for Healing Epiphany IV (O. T. 4); January 28, 2018 Luke 4:31-37 My friend told me of the voices that afflicted him. These were not the "voices in your head" that accompany certain psychological disorders, but voices of a different sort. He is a talented cook, an accomplished musician, and a loving friend. But the voices told him he was wor...

Sermon from January 21: A Place for Learning

A Place for Learning Epiphany III (O. T. 3); January 21, 2018 Luke 2:41-51 A child who asks good questions and who has good answers to questions can be a real joy and a real pain, right? When you're a pastor or a teacher you can be really energized by a twelve year-old who asks stimulating questions and who has bright ideas; if you're that child's ...

Sermon for Christmas I: Live in Hope

Live in Hope Christmas I; December 31, 2017 Isaiah 61:10-62:3 "For Jerusalem's sake I will not rest until her vindication shines out like the dawn and her salvation like a burning torch." The city of Jerusalem has been a flashpoint for much of recorded history and never more than right now. We Christians use the name "Jerusalem" in two ways and let...

Sermon for Christmas Eve: The Singing Army

The Singing Army Christmas Eve; December 24, 2017 Luke 2:1-20 What's the picture in your head when you hear, "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host"? What do you think a heavenly host looks like? Several rows of choristers wearing robes and with their music folders open? One of the tenors is barefoot. Oh, right, the...

Sermon for Advent IV: Child of Promise

Child of Promise Advent IV; December 24, 2017 Isaiah 9:2-7 We tend to see promise in every child. At the baptism of a child, we hear parents make promises and we remember the promises of God, but we especially think of the promise of a life in its earliest stages. When parents are disappointed in their children, it's for their having failed to live...

Sermon for Advent II: Love Is on the Way

Love Is on the Way Advent II; December 10, 2017 Isaiah 40:1-11 I've been wondering – and I'm not asking you to raise your hands – how many of us really expect Jesus to come again. Around here there have been more prayers for the second coming of Scott Frost. [1] The New Testament is drenched with the assurance that Christ will return. And we Christ...

Sermon for Advent I: Holy Inversion

Our technician didn't get this one recorded, so you won't be able to listen to it. But here is the print version. Holy Inversion Advent I; December 3, 2017 Isaiah 64:1-9 There have been times I've begged God to make some sort of show of power. When a greed-crazed CEO raises medication prices astronomically, do something about him. When governmen...

Sermon for Christ the King 2017

Seek Christ: Know Jesus Christ the King; November 26, 2017 John 1:1-5, 10-18 Martin Luther is reported to have said that the Scriptures are the manger in which one finds Jesus Christ. Pastor Sara told you a terrific story last week about the finding of a Nativity set and the search for Christ. My friend Linde Grace told me about her daughter taking...

Sermon from November 12: Huldah's Message

Huldah's Message Pentecost XXIII (O. T. 32); November 12, 2017 II Kings 22:8-20 Here's the story. The Temple of the Lord had not received proper maintenance for many years, so young King Josiah decided it needed some work. Sounds familiar. So the King ordered the priests of the Temple to recruit carpenters and masons and other workers and to buy wo...

Sermon for Reformation Sunday: Marked by Grace

Marked by Grace Reformation Sunday; October 29, 2017 Psalm 103:8-14 I have been thinking a lot about Martin Luther these days. In case you haven't heard me say it before: October 31, 2017 is the 500 th anniversary of the Ninety-Five Theses that Martin Luther offered to protest the sale of indulgences. He certainly sent them to the regiona...

Pastor Bob's Building Blog: October 26, 2017

Pastor Bob's Building Blog October 26, 2017 I have not done this for a while and this should be nearly the last one. You can see the progress for yourselves whenever you come to the Church House, but for those who are distant and for those who don't see around every corner I thought I would catch you up. As I write this, the painters are putting th...

Sermon from October 22: Consider Mary...

Consider Mary, and Jacob, and David, and… Pentecost XX (O. T. 29); October 22, 2017 Deuteronomy 7:6-9 We have heard sermons on the Reformation principle "Sola fide," that it is by faith alone that we know the salvation of God. We know we are saved not because of our good works, but we know because of our faith. Now we are beginning a short series o...
