40 Day Journey in Lent - March 20

March 20—Psalm 37:37—Kathy Koslosky

Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is prosperity for the peaceable.”

Recently I read an incredible book, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.  Incredible in that it was entertaining but also thought provoking.  Set in World War II Germany is the story of ordinary people surviving not only physically, but emotionally, during extraordinary times.  Hans Hubermann is a family man, house painter, musician.  Ordinary in every sense of the word.  Surrounded by the harsh realities of Nazi Germany what particularly weighs on Hans is the treatment of the Jews.  All around he witnesses those who choose to actively, or by omission for self preservation, single out the Jews.  Hans cannot bring himself to mistreat people he knows have done nothing more wrong than practice their faith.  His refusal to turn his back in order to live the life he knows to be right has serious consequences for his family but is essential to him for the preservation of his soul.  Hans does not choose the easy road, and it does not end well for him physically, but he lives his life in a way he can rest easy with when it comes to an end.  I want to always remind myself of his lesson, and remember that the reward will come not with short term easy choices but in sometimes choosing the longer road of living according to God’s teachings.

Thank you, Kathy, for reminding me to choose God's way instead of the "easy" way.
