Your Building Task Force (Kevin Breyfogle, Chair; Betty Johnson, Matt Koslosky, Kathy Sutula, Jerry Magner, Tyler Foster, Doug Avery, Ann Delashmutt, Dee Moriarty, and I) met with our architect from Alley Poyner Macchietto to see what he would suggest for a scaled-back, but still engaging, project. We have drawings and information and would love input before we make a recommendation to the Session.
Only one big construction piece is proposed: to expand the hall in front of the office out into the Courtyard to make a large entrance lobby (church word is “narthex”) and a very visible main entrance. Part of that would be to enclose the small sidewalk next to the Sanctuary to create storage space, and to erect a new bell tower near the new entrance.
The proposal continues with the idea of moving the administration offices to where they used to be, in the old building section across from Fellowship Hall, and to convert the administration wing into classrooms, with the Church library continuing in the center of that. That would move the nursery closer to the Sanctuary, and put all the classrooms together in one space.
The south end of the building – apartment and other rooms – would be left as it is. As has already begun, we can repurpose those rooms as we wish. I think, for example, that it would be easy to convert one of those rooms into a nice chapel.
Also in the new proposal are necessary improvements: new carpet, updated bathrooms, new furnaces and air conditioning units. Paint, of course. Shades for the Sanctuary windows so we can darken the room without having to go up on the roof. Finishing putting new siding on the outside. Some of the other ideas in the original proposal would have to be left for another time: expanding the kitchen, creating a patio behind Fellowship Hall.
So, what now? We want your input. Members of the Task Force have the current drawing for you to look at. I mentioned our names earlier; ask any of us for a look. Don’t focus on details, but on the larger questions: shall we create a better gathering space? Shall we bring all the education rooms together where the offices are now, and move the offices to a smaller, but more accessible, area? We’re going to gather opinions and ideas, then decide what to recommend to the Session.
