DATELINE NEW ORLEANS - Contrary to rumors, we are in fact going to leave New Orleans today. Yesterday, while shuttling the volunteers from Nebraska and North Carolina between the 4 houses our group worked on, the vus suddenly stopped running on Elysian Fields. John and Larry had the vus towed to a local Ford dealership who pronounced the diagnosis as a failed ignition coil. As I write this, it looks like we're about 2 hours or so from hitting the road. We'll be staying in a hotel this evening en route rather than pressing through to St. Louis as originally planned. I would like to point out, for the record, that not only did the problem seem to occur the first time we started the vus in the church parking lot a week ago, but that Larry's RENTED van had problems earlier in the week than the vus. So, what does that tell ya? Yesterday was certainly a hard day of work as we finished up the houses. The tour of the houses was cut a little short since we suddenly lost the ability to transport 30 people at a time, but many of us did get to see all the work we'd completed this week. Bret and I took advantage of the work Becky and John did underneath their house on Paupon Street. Believe it or not, sitting on the dirt underneath that house was probably the coolest I've been all week. Great job, Becky and John! Last night some of us went into town to hear some music and others stayed in the Village and enjoyed an evening together. It was a good end to a good week. I'll try to report more tonight. Barring any unforseen mishaps, we should still be home again tomorrow night .... although it's still safe to say that if not for our employers, many of us would be staying down here longer (myself included).
